Yes you can, BUT, they will not last, and your run time will be very short. It is cheaper in the long run to buy golf cart batteries.

If I may add...

Mine came with - and i still use 3 deep cycle 12v marine batteries. Even at 1 yr old I can tell you the run time is significantly shorter than golf cart batteries. I will be replacing them back to 6-6v batts over the winter.

Car, or starting batteries as they are referred to, are built different than golf cart batteries.

Car batteries have thin plates which give up a lot of amperage quickly to start the car, they require quick and immediate recharging after a relatively shallow discharge via the alternator which does the job as soon as the car starts.....

Golf cart batteries have many more and much thicker plates designed to hold more amperage and release it slowly over long periods of time.....

These are two very different animals.

Not only are the plates thicker but there are more plates to the cell...... They have more lead and you can actually judge a GC battery by it's weight. Some are 62 pounds while others are 64. The more lead a battery has the greater it amperage storage capacity is

Sounds like you're thinking about buying some cart batteries, so here's a couple of suggestions.

Read the Sticky: at the top of the Electric EZGO forum comparing various cart batteries.
(While your there, take a look at the other Sticky:s also. Lots of good info.)

Go to ScottyB's website and read everything he's got about batteries.

In a nutshell:
New GC batteries have to be broken in (Matured) properly to get maximum storage capacity.
GC batteries have to be Charged properly for maximum life span. (They are called deep discharge, but the deeper they are discharged between charges, the shorter the life span)
GC Batteries must be properly maintained (Watering and Cleaning) for optimal performance.
