How about trying a synthetic oil? It doesn't contain the paraffin like waxes like dino oil and does not thicken when cold.

Like others have said my first thought was water/moisture.
My other suggestion would be to try actual gear oil. I prefer Royal Purple or Mobil One. I know the manual says 30wt but that was back in 1991. Oil technology and additives have improved quite a bit in 22 years especially for extreme conditions like very low temps. |

Yes, try the STP and if that doesn't work try a different type oil. And if that doesn't work wrap it in an electric blanket.
