Default Loose Steering

Hi Guys,

I'm new and looking to make some modifications to a EZGO Shuttle I just purchased.

Before I begin having "fun" with it, I was wondering if you guys have run into issues with steering being a little loose. Its not a huge deal, but i'd like to tighten it nonetheless.

Any help is appreciated.

What year is your cart? Loose steering can be a multitude of things. Loose spindles, loose tie rod ends, bearings, lug nuts, beer drinking and welcome to BGW........

Thanks.

It's a 2004. Took it out for its first ride and while the steering is loose, the tires also seem to wobble a bit.

I also noticed that the battery level went from full to about half in a 20 minute ride. I'm going to need to monitor this and will give it an over night charge.

When you feel the looseness, is it in your steering wheel, or in your seat?

The looseness is in the wheel.

The ride seemed a little bumpy, but I don't think that's due to the steering.

Seat looseness usually means the rear axle. Check the rear axke fir looseness, get under the cart and try and shake components to see if they are loose, like shocks and shock mounts.. Do this with the cart on all fours

Oh sorry, you said wheel! I must have been asleep. Check the tie rod ends and the wheel bearing and also for a bent wheel. Do you have pressure in the tires?

Pressure on the tires are all at 22 PSI. The tie rods and wheel bearings seem fine too.

You say the tires wobble a lot. That is probably what is making the steering feel loose. Here are some things you can try:

Take off the front wobbly tires and swap them with a rear tire and see if that fixes it. Visaully check the front tire at speed (careful!) and see if it wobbles
Find a known good wheel (maybe a neighbor?) and swap it with the suspect front tire and see if it goes away
Lastly, failing all that, you might be able to take the tire/wheel to a tire store and have them check it for trueness.

My 98 had worn rack and pinion as well as a few bushings. it couldn't be determined by just playing with it on jack stands, but replacement parts solved the problem. I still need to check my toe-in.
