Default 2pg Replacement Engine options?

I have an 86 Marathon whose 2pg engine died a horrible death (broken connecting rod). I can attempt to rebuild it OR opt for an upgrade.

Are there any upgrade options for this engine? I would love a 4 cycle but from what I understand they don't run in reverse so no reverse.

I think the 3pg sits sideways so that wont work.

If i did one of those Harbor Freight 13hp engines, how do I do reverse?

Any help is appreciated!!

If you don't go back with what came out of it you will need a rear axle from a gas model in order to have forward and reverse. That goes for the Robins engines and clone replacements.

There's a rebuilt ec25-2pg online for 550 + shipping or you can do a rebuild kit for 400 + shipping. Not sure what the best option is but we are in the same boat. My 84 needs a new motor or a rebuild too.

I don't like buying blind. If it was me, I would take the engine apart to see exactly what it needs, and then decide from there.

Possibilities range from needing an entire crankshaft, to just bearings, or maybe just some rings. You never know until you take everything apart for evaluation.

I just took my brother's 83 apart expecting a full blown rebuild. One new head gasket later, and he is running good as new.
