Default G14 primary clutch has In & Out slop about 1/4" is this normal.

ok so I posted yesterday about my G14 that it starts to move while the engine is attempting to start. I greased the primary and secondary like people mentioned thank you :) after I did that I was turning over the primary by hand I noticed the outer half of the primary actually has about 1/4 of end play or slop it will move very easy like there is no spring tension or anything holding it out at all. so basically as soon as motor starts to turn over my primary slides inward and makes contact with my belt and starts to engage. my question is. do I have a broken primary spring or one that is totally worn out?

My clutch did that one day didn't have an idle wanted to creep forward . I pulled the cover and found a broken weight. I ordered the three weight kit and new plastic slides. Now it works like it suppose to except I do have a little play up and down . I forgot to order new bushings. Mine will idle while in gear now. I do have Plowmans new belt he recommended .

Kelly one more thing if you are talking about grabbing the clutch and pushing it straight in and back out for the 1/4" play mine has that too. Only higher rpm should make the clutch go in with the weights moving it and grabbing the belt . Mine won't go in at a really low idle. It takes more rpm.

hey bama yes that's what I mean if I grab it with my hands I can slide it in and out about a 1/4 of an inch which basically is when the inside of the clutch begins to touch the belt. I will have to check the weights because there must be something going on inside I knew there was supposed to be a little stall speed or rpm required to make the clutch move to engage. but like I said on mine if I pull my clutch all the way out and hit the pedal mine starts to slide in before my motor turns over 2 times and the belt starts to grab almost instantly to the point it starts to roll forward as its turning over.

Guys, there is no stall in these clutches, the minute they turn, they should engage. Even moving the car on the starter!! That in and out free play, is normal!

Hey Mac On mine I was talking about while running if I stop and motor is at a really low idle just before the stop switch makes mine will not creep forward. Primary is not grabbing the belt to pull . I don't do this for too long. Now when I start it and want to take off the rpm is higher and belt grabs.

With a lifted car, belt width is important. New is 1 3/16" wide. Under inch and a sixteenth, I believe is worn out. There may be a new belt out that is even wider, to my understanding. Maybe someone will chime in and let us know for sure. But start looking at clutch maint. Could be low air in tires.

I put new bushings in the prim on mine. I dressed them so the sheave slid on but with no wobble. Now it kicks you in the butt the second the starter turns!! I also keep the secondary pretty clean, believing that everything is pretty free to move effortlessly!!
