Driven Clutch Removal
I went to pull my driven clutch today from my 89 marathon, removed bolt pulled clutch and it slid out about 1/2" and stopped, back in, back out and stops. It is also loose on the shaft, it turns the wheels but is loose and wobbly when pulled out. Shaft on rear end is solid, is it a keyed shaft and the key is messed up? If so what should it try next? I did try a little tapping and prying, does not move past and stays loose.
Thanks for any help! Scott |

Re: Driven Clutch Removal
I did use PB on it but that does not appear the issue, like I said I can slide it back and fourth no problem, it will only slide off about 1/2-3/4" then feels like it hits something, it feels like something could be broke inside the clutch and stopping it. When I slide it off the little bit I can, I see no splines on the shaft thats why I asked if it was keyed.

Re: Driven Clutch Removal
Straight from the tech manual for 89..... remove the bolt and washer and slide it off. Not sure why yours is binding but it may need more assertive persuasion.

Re: Driven Clutch Removal
Should see splines, if 3/4" off, I'd think.

Re: Driven Clutch Removal
I got it! After I looked at the picture saw the same smooth area that was before the splines, did the tap and turn for a while and kept working it. Now need to make a press to get it apart, hardware store tomorrow!
Thank you Both! |

Re: Driven Clutch Removal
I also made a press from the hardware store. It works great when your putting back together too. Not sure what your using but i bought a threaded rod and some nuts and fender washers and a piece of metal on the end to hold the helix while your pulling everything together. Just make sure you can still get to where the snap ring goes on the end. Works great especially if you putting a stiffer spring inside the driven clutch. Good luck hope it goes well.
