Default Aux Power Source

Considering adding a 12 V outlet so that we could utilize accessories. Will the generator support additional useage and what is the proper way to wire it in and for those who have done it, where did you mount it ?

Thanks

All accessories should be wired directly to the battery. No grounds to the frame. The starter /generator will do just fine with normal accessories--light kit, horn, cig lighter plug---stuff like that. Accessories can be wired thru a fuse block and relay so they only work when the key is on.

I'm thinking of adding one of those to my cart also. Where are you going to mount yours?

Nothing wrong with grounding to the frame at all. My flood lights are grounded to the frame with zero issues all last season.

Sometimes having multiple grounding locations creates problems because of parts that don't ground to each other. If you are grounding to the main frame, and that's where your battery ground is, then it's the same. If you ground to a subframe, that could pose an issue with intermittent grounding, which can damage electronics and create arcs. Also, with many small grounds, if there is ever a problem, you have to check each ground connector, more connections to fail. Just preference really.

I always run a main ground wire from the battery to the frame/engine, then run all my small accessories to the battery. I've seen some use a fuse block, which looks really neat and tidy. Again, just preference.

The biggest mistake I see is people not using the proper type of wire. With low voltage, you want to use stranded copper, preferably the finer stuff that's more flexible. Most of the time I see improper gauge used, meaning, using a wire that's too small to handle the amperage of a low voltage system.

Ya Slo I have always used a good ground to the frame to the engine. Always any sub-frame or isolated parts should be grounded to the main ground.

I mess with old cars and most electrical problems with them are because the grounds are bad. The first thing I tell them is to clean all grounds real good before they rip out the wiring loom thinking it was bad. People don't understand how electricity WILL find a way if the grounds are corroded and dirty and cause all kinds of crazy problems.

Maybe not grounding to the frame is a cart kind of thing is why I asked...?

Light kits run everything back to the battery. I was just parroting info that most Yamaha owners have found to be true. Grounding to the frame will work, but if you start to blow fuses, the frame grounds would be the first thing to check.

Early model Yamaha carts (G9 era) use an "open/closed ground ignition". Grounding to frame has been known to cause problems with age, dirt etc. G16 going forward, not so much a problem as different ignition is used.

I ground all acc. to the ground lug on the starter, and pick up the positive on the battery side of the solenoid, then through a fuse, using 14 gage wire.

G2/9 the frame really is not grounded factory since nothing connects to it. The engine is for the gen, but that is not the frame its the cradle. So you have to ground the frame if you want to use it for a ground for other things. Usually it will blow fuses if you try otherwise, it has pos and neg fuses they are only 10a or something. I grounded my frame when I put aftermarket halogen lights on it and never had any issues till one day it broke off and my lights barely worked lol.

You can run a relay off the key (before the pedal) or off the start solenoid for engine running, to turn off things with the cart. But I'd wire all the power to the battery, the factory wiring is not sized for any additional loads.

The gen makes 15A power at mid or high rpm, less at idle rpm. Figure a 55w light is around 4.6A each (55/12v=4.6) so that is 9.2A. Figure the ignition needs a little power itself you don't have much left. That is why LED lights are a great idea on carts.

If you use a good size car/truck battery and drive around during the day so it charges, you should be able to run most anything off it within reason. But if you use something huge like a giant spot light or subwoofer amplifiers or multiple halogen lights constantly then it may give up after a while. Mine will run a set of 55w driving lights no problem long as I don't leave them on for a long time with the cart off, just like with a car.
