Default Carryall Project won't run

Got a carryall with 287cc Kawi engine in non running condition. Engine build date 1998.

Has good spark, 25 degrees Btdc
Compression is 135psi

Carb bowl is getting gas and I pulled the main jet and imulsion tube and made sure everything was clear.

Turns over fine with stater generator.

Will pop a few times with staring fluid or gas in the spark plug hole but doesn't keep running.

Ideas?

Engine spins clockwise looking at the clutch side, if that helps. What years did they spin that way?

Thanks

Engines were counter-clockwise from 1984-1996, then CC switched to clockwise engines around 1997. There may be some overlap between 1996-1997.

Is the gas making it into the combustion chamber? Dripping wet spark plug after a few seconds of cranking?

definitely seems like a fuel issue if youre getting it to start momentarily with starting fluid. Check your plug as mentioned above, after choking it and tryig to turn it over for a little it should be wet with gas. also, with the plug out, you can turn the engine over and see if a mist of gas gets pushed through the plug hole. Just make sure the area around the plug is clean of debris first. Id also do a compression test and make sure youre getting compression.

As mentioned 135psi compression. Will mess around with fuel more. I took a turkey baster and put some fuel in the plug hole and it seemed to run a little longer off that.

Double check the rotation of the drive clutch... it's supposed to rotate counter-clockwise!

Now that I've been corrected... (that's what I get for taking the "Evelyn Wood Speed Reading Course"!)
thank you Springbok!

135 psi seems a bit low for the compression, a fresh FE290 runs 165 psi,
my buddies 94 FE290 was running about 145 psi, it was weak, but still runs to this day!

Question... do you have the intake tube/air box all hooked up when your trying to get it started?

I have tried both with the hose off and installed, played around with choke, no difference

Its very loud with the hose off, sounds like the muffler isn't installed or it has a big exhaust leak, and is very quiet with the hose, I thought that was a bit odd.

Also seems to cough gas out of the intake adaptor as its cranking with the hose off.

It will spit gas out, and also be louder with the intake hose off!
BUT... in order for it to get the proper fuel/air mixture, the intake system needs to be connected to the carb for it to run decently!

Hmmm...
