I thought it was odd as well about the two coils.
One looks original
The other looks like a more recent knock-off.

It sure seems like the lawnmower guys that worked on these did a number on them. Each had wiring issues and this one had a missing fuse holder/fuse.

Sounds like I drilled too far on the carb.

I'm going to buy a magnifying glass, I swear I am.

I did check the ground and this 2nd cart has two ground wires.
One is coming from the left bolt that holds on the solenoid to the frame
and another that is on the right bolt that holds the solenoid to the frame.

Both bolts, ring tips, and wires were checked and cleaned as well as the area where they attach to the frame.

I'll check the wires, end to end as well ... haven't done it yet.

About 1/2 of this harness is in better shape and about 1/2 of the harness is in worse shape than the first cart. Guess a different mechanic butchered the other one.

My coil tests were done with the coil removed from the engine, per the directions in the manual. So I'm hoping I did the testing correctly. We shall see.

Confession:
I don't know how to follow directions and correctly use a multi meter.
---

The original ignition coil was bad - no reading on the secondary.
The new ignition coil was out of bounds on its reading - (cheap chinese knockoff).

The first cart (that I put the clone in) had a good ignition coil. I just didn't notice that I should have changed the ohms on the 'k' 1000 ohms level. Then I would have gotten correct readings.

Such a shame, as many decades I've been on this earth and I still can't follow directions using a multi-meter.

My game plan now is to purchase a sparkplug tester and a compression tester.

Test things out.

are you getting any spark, if not maybe your ignitor is bad, do you have the old one from the other cart?

I did try swapping out the ignitor from the first cart to the second.
Didn't seem to make any difference.

But, I agree on the big cost.

My plan is to step back, test all the lines again and make sure I have no fuel issue, airbox issue, muffler issue -- at that point I can feel better that my due diligence is done.

I'm gunshy about the electrical now since I made such a bonehead mistake on testing the coils.

I wouldn't say a bone head mistake, check your ignitors and make sure all the prongs are still attached I had 2 that the prongs broke off, and 1 wire broke on one that still looked attached..

That may not be your grounds. Yamaha does not ground the frame and does not use the frame for ground on G9s. They only ground the cradle mount so the engine ignition has a ground, and the starter/gen is on the mount with it. Any other ground goes to the battery or battery cable, unless someone put grounds on it. Stock the battery does not ground to the frame, I had to ground mine to make my lights work as they have no ground wire, they ground through the mount bolt. The stock ground wiring has a 10A fuse in it that usually blows up if you add any accessories to the stock wiring.

According to the spark plug tester, there is no spark.

The coil tests good, the two lines (w-b, w-r)? to the circular plug test good.

The starter does turn the starter belt which does turn the drive belt.

Its a new spark plug.

More research needed... I'll go see about the other cart for a while.

Could this stock cart - no spark issue be a pedal switch failure?

I've been reading through old forum entries searching for other likely candidates to test.

If it cools down, I'll try the pedal switch and check the brown wires and red wires to the pedal switch, red wires to the coil and ignitor.

Will report back.
