Default air screw on carb

why does the air screw on my carb float back and forth while engine is running? Shouldn't there be a small spring on that screw to hold it in place when set? And where should it be set from closed, one turn back or what!

Mine has a plastic cap with a pointer on it, it keeps it from only going so far each way.

Mine's a 2000, never noticed a difference either way, thought it was just an idle adjustment thing

Mine is like yours.

It does not seem to make any difference where its at, I have played with it all the way one way then the other way, no difference!
