Re: Yamaha G1 Rear wheels locked up—Where to start?
They usually run really good with a fresh top end.

Re: Yamaha G1 Rear wheels locked up—Where to start?
The Plowman's G1 top end parts are better than oem.

Re: Yamaha G1 Rear wheels locked up—Where to start?
Well I got the new top end in. Put it on just to find out that the bottom end bearing on crankshaft is trash. ****. Has metal shavings coming from the bearings, which was probably what caused the top end to get all scarred up in the first place. Bottom end rebuild is a lot more work it seems. Now I am debating on whether I should continue or look into an engine swap. Any suggestions?

Re: Yamaha G1 Rear wheels locked up—Where to start?
If you do a engine swap to a 4-stroke engine, you will lose reverse gear. The G1 achieves reverse by running the engine backwards (which a 2-stroke is capable of, but not a 4-stroke).

Yup I know. That’s the biggest disadvantage.

Re: Yamaha G1 Rear wheels locked up—Where to start?
I've done a few G1 engines, they are actually very simple to work on. No valves, push rods, cams, etc etc. To replace the crank you need to split the engine case. You'll need a puller tool to do that. The crank bearings and seals are easy, as is installing the new crank. The tricky part is you have to freeze the bearings and heat up the engine cases to get them installed. I just put the engine on the bbq for a few minutes, worked great.
Engine swap isn't all that difficult if you have a good engine and the proper clutch for it. The worst part is making an engine mount and getting it to line up properly. That takes some fabrication skills to get it right. The aftermarket doesn't make an engine mount plate for that cart to bolt in. The rest like the wiring, throttle cable, belt, all fairly easy. It's the fabrication part that holds most people back from doing a swap in a G1. |
