Default Mci engine

I have a 2006 workhorse st 350.
What is a MCI engine?
Is it good or bad?
Would I have one in my workhorse?

The MCI is the same engine as the pre MCI, it has a different ignition system and some small differences. The exhaust and cyl. head are all made into one and the flywheel is different. I don't think it is bad whatsoever. I have 2 carts, one with and one without and they both perform well. So I've been told, the MCI engine was produced by design to cut down on take off lag ( from pushing the pedal til you move ) and help with emissions and fuel economy. I don't know if this is accurate but it's what I've been told. If your cart is a 2006 it should have one in it unless it has been replaced with a pre MCI engine and setup for it.

It has 360 hours on it and it has not been replaced.
I hope it last a long time. It runs and looks new.
My wife said I have gone nuts over buggys.
OK I think she maybe right I like them all.

Yes if yours is a 2006 it is an MCI engine made by Subaru Robin (Fuji Heavy Industries, Japan). If they are looked after, i.e. oil changed regularly, oil filter cleaned (they are cleanable so don't need replacing), petrol filter, air filter, spark plugs etc changed annually etc they last really well, should do 2000+ hours without before it needs any major work. Remember to use the correct weight of oil SAE 30 or (SAE40 for heavy loads) and don't over fill, even the a small amount over the top of the full line will make it smoke A LOT!

The main advantage I have found with the MCI (I have 2 vehicles one with the pre mci and one with the mci), is the MCI unit has a single hose crankcase breather, thus easy to change when it spits (and it will, trust me!). Where as the older pre-mci has 2 hoses, an upper and lower. to replace the lower, the engine mount has to be removed, and this is a lot more time consuming! - took me a good few hours at the weekend!

The only thing I would say is make sure you check the timing belt on the motor after 500 hours, mine was surprisingly worn and needed replacement at 650 hours (and 6 years). Its not to difficult to do if you download a copy of the engine manual, but is well worth doing as it will cost a lot to fix the top end if it snaps! The belt itself is under $15. The only specialist tool you need is a clutch puller for the drive clutch (about $30) but many people on here have improvised and found low cost alternatives - search for forums on removing ez-go drive clutch.

Also if your at just over 300 hours, check and replace the ramp buttons in your driven clutch (the pulley on the rear axel). I didn't. It wore out the cam and cost over $60 for a replacement. Where as a set of new ramp buttons is less than 10 bucks! so please learn from my mistake. again search on there there are plenty of simple guides which are great.

Oh and as yours is a workhorse, also note that when you replace the drive belt you should use the heavy duty drive belt as it is factory fitted with the 28 degree power clutch. Yes this belt costs nearly double what the standard one does, but it wont work properly without it. You get far more torque and pulling power with it, well worth the money as they last ages

enjoy your cart!
