Question what happens when?

what happens when the transmission governor get stuck? Mine is disconnected (shaft only no arm on top) the shaft should turn about 1/4 of a turn but mine just barely turns.

Don't know that it turns a quarter, I took mine out. I have pictures of mine in "The G8 Club". Removed it thinking it was making a metalic sound, and worried it was going to fail and blow-up the tranny. Its very well built and mine had no signs of wear, but removed it anyway. My metalic sound was all the bolts and fasteners were loose from building the car 3 yrs. prior! So check all bolts on lift and everything else you've been into, on your car.

1/4 turn was just what the mechanic that installed the transmission told me. I thought that was a lot myself since I never could get it to move much anyway. I called him and he said to put the cart in neutral and rev the motor then turn the shaft while the rpms are up and it would dislodge the governor. I tried that and it didn't work. The tranny makes a popping sound when you try to back up and I thought it may be the governor gear.

Just one pop or many? If one, its just the cogs slipping into their seats. The same thing could happen going into forward gear. Thats why both motor and tranny can not be moving when you change gear. Hard on the tranny.

Its more like a 10 speed bicycle when you are changing gears and the chain is in between sprockets kinda like a pop pop pop until you let off the gas pedal. I always come to a complete stop before shifting from F to R or R to F. I gonna check the shifter arm at tranny and see if it needs adjusting. Maybe not going into R completely or something.

Man I dont' know, (over my head). do you hear it while just pushing it, in neutral?

Come to think of it, mine will do it in neutral, if the shifter isn't in the center of the neutral position. So I think your problem is shifter linkage adjustment.

Ok...I figured it out. It is the chain going from the jackshaft to the transmission. It has just enough slack in it that the non pressure side starts jumping up and down when I go in reverse. Guess it is the geometry and the axle wrap with the loose chain. I now need to figure out how to make a tensioner for it. All this time I thought it was coming from inside the tranny.

Well...Crap. The chain tensioner didn't fix it like I thought it would. Was 99.9% sure that was the problem. It did fix the loose flapping of the chain but I still hear the popping when backing up. Guess I am left with loading it up and taking it back to the shop that installed the transmission for the previous owner and see if they have any ideas.

When you reverse your chain tensioner is being pushed against its spring and this allows the other side of the chain to become loose! You may be able to put a " half link " in your chain to tighten it up some. it must have some play or you'll be wearing out bearings! Most hardware stores will have half links. You'll have to know what size the chain is. If you're not sure take it with you when you go.
