Mine's still doing good, too.

That little spring is the key.

Had a backfire issue with my Yamaha G2 and adjusting the throttle plate stop screw on the side of the carb til the plate closes completely solved the problem

Mine's still doing good and my dog is back to riding with me.

Now I have to figure out what to do about the dadgum fireworks that scare her to death.

I am having this same problem with my '85. I have BBQ'd the muffler thinking that I had it plugged up from running it a little bit rich with the oil/gas mix... about 1.75 oz oil (Klotz super techniplate) per gal of gas. I seen the pics in this thread and my set up is missing the spring that is in there... I'm sure that this is part of the problem. When I bought the cart, It had been newly rebuilt from the crank up and ran good, but had an after market air cleaner installed that keeps falling off and has sucked a little dirt into it - not a lot but it shouldn't have been any. I need to find a complete air intake/cleaner set up for it. I am going to get a compression gauge and check it as soon as I am able. Spark plug color looks good - maybe just a little rich from the oil.
Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

Go Tee Man, thanks for posting that photo. I am restoring an 86 and it never had a spring now I see how it goes and more importantly how the governer will work. Way cool.

I think I figured my problem out. I removed the Carb to clean it and when I removed the float bowl, the main jet dropped out and fell on the bench. I believed that it wasn't screwed in real tight and then worked itself out to the point that it fell out - pretty much dumping a lot of gas in it... resulting in the backfires.
I won't know until tomorrow to see if it was the problem but should take care of it.

I'm still having a backfiring problem at low speed, I adjusted the pilot valve screw but still backfires. It appears to me that the throttle plate closes all the way. Could the valves need yo be adjusted? Its a 1997 EZGO ...any ideas

I know this is an old post, but I am having the same issue with my 84 ezgo. I don't seem to have the spring on the throttle cable you guys were talking about. Is there any chance you guys still have pictures that you could show me?
