Re: 1989 s stroke I think
The pistons are the same. The two windows are connected on some.

Re: 1989 s stroke I think
I have a factory service manual dated jan 1989 on the 3pg.
I actually have two service manuals and I don't think both are wrong. It stated more than one time on the way the piston goes in. The TWO rectangular holes go toward exhaust. Not to be confused with the 2 PG. |

1989 s stroke I think
There will only be a hole/holes on one side of that piston, and it should always face the intake. 3PG and 2PG.

Re: 1989 s stroke I think
Not sure about those manuals- but I know it won’t work with the holes facing the exhaust. It will pop and backfire but never start.
My rebuild manual said ports face the carb (intake side.) That’s how it was, and that’s how it works. That manual is confusing to me though. Club Car DS driver’s club #59 |

Re: 1989 s stroke I think
Very confusing but you and I know which way ours go. Maybe the person that rebuilt this engine I have read a manual like I have which is for the 3 pg -1989 models.
I have another 2pg engine that I pulled from a running golf cart. The piston is in it like it is supposed to be. I just hope these posts don't confuse others. Tom |

Re: 1989 s stroke I think
Removed the engine and turned the piston around. Still runs bad . It tries to run but just will not go. I checked compression again. It shows 130 .
Gas seems to running out where exhaust pipe connects to head. Gas fouled the plug. I have took this carburetor apart once and it looked like new but I cannot say for sure if it is the correct one. It is clean inside but did have old gas in it. Tank was cleaned and fresh gas mixture added. Not sure how the owner mixed but I told him 1 oz to 1 gallon. Back to it tomorrow to check more. |

Re: 1989 s stroke I think
Mine didn’t run correctly until I put in the right plug. NGK BP4HS. I replaced my carb but am still having some minor issues with it.

Re: 1989 s stroke I think
I put one of those in it.
Cart around mentioned the ripped lower diaphragm. Seems like I remember these flooding the crankcase with gas ? Been a long time since I last worked on these engines and my memory is not good. :) I think he might be on to something even though this piston was in backwards. I will report my find. Tom |
