Default 3pg piston in 2pg motor?

Can a 3pg piston be used in a 2pg motor. If this is possible, the 2 windows in the 3pg piston would allow more flow than the small, single window in the 2pg. Are the bore/stroke specs the same on these two motors? Has anyone ever done this with a 2pg motor.

I can't remember where I sourced this and I can't vouch for its accuracy but this is an extract from the history of the Robin engine and it states that the piston will fit. Now to find someone brave enough to prove it.

In mid-year 1989, (early '89 models had the 2pg engine) E-Z-GO changed to the '3pg' engine, leaving the old 2pg to history. The '3pg' engine has the spark plug turned upward, and the whole engine is rotated such that both clutches face the driver side of the golf cart. This rotation allowed for the differential to be changed from a hypoid gearing to a more efficient helical gear design, a change that persists to this day. The lay-down style golf cart muffler for the '3pg' engine is in front of, and slightly above the engine. The piston is about the only part that works in either engine. The crankshaft & clutches, the exhaust system, the carburetor, air intake & control cables all changed.

The piston will fit, but there is a problem. I found this out today.

The 3pg motor has the reedcage mounted in the side of the jug. The fuel enters the crankcase through the double window in the side of the piston.

The 2pg motor has the reedcage mounted in the side of the crankcase. The fuel enters directly into the crankcase. The small window in the side of the 2pg piston is actually a boost port which flows a small bit of fuel mixture across the top of the piston, toward the exhaust.

Both motors utilize the transfer ports for main fuel delivery.
