Default Starting Issues with an older EzGo

I have an older EzGo Gas golf cart that used to run great. Not sure on the year or model, here is the info from the tag on the frame of the cart. Serial number 349216 and Mfg Code is B7585. It will start in forward, but will not start in reverse, the engine does turn in the reverse direction but wont start. The plug is getting spark in both forward and reverse. And the carb is getting fuel. Like i said, it will run fine in forward, but the engine wont start in reverse, the backup alarm does come on like it should when the gas pedal is pushed. Just started doing this. It seems to me, that if i have spark and gas in both forward and reverse, then it should run.

Not for sure but the problem could be in the Forward/Reverse Selector.

They have micro switches and your micro switches for the reverse could be bad.

Try placing the selector in reverse and hold it as far in the reverse position you can while pressing the gas to see if it will run in reverse then.

This sometimes works, causing the engine to run and indicates that a micro switch is out of adjustment if of course the engine does run.

But, if the micro switch was bad, would i still have spark?

You need to do a compression test both forward and reverse.

Unfortunately I do not know enough to give you any help but maybe you can help me. You said something about a data tag on the frame. Could you tell me where it is located. Your post was the first time I have heard of that plate. My car has the one under the glove box but does not have a manufacturer's number so I can't figure out what year model it is.

I agree with the compression test idea. Could be a timing issue?

Ok, got the compression test done today.. 50lbs compression in forward and 40lbs in reverse. I know this is low, what do you guys think? Reed valves or just needs new rings?

Sounds like its time to consider rebuilding the motor.
