G9 Intermittent start problem
Hi All, Im newbie on the forum. New to Yamaha Golf carts. Have experience in the outdoor power equipment industry for many years but very little experience with golf carts.
Yami G9 (i think) Golf Cart has intermittent fault when starting. It may run fine for 12 holes then become unresponsive when depressing accelerator pedal. ie the engine wont start, starter does not turn over. Seems more susceptible to giving problems on a hot day. Given the age of the cart and its unknown service history what would be the likely cause of symptoms. i have a circuit diagram and multimeter to help navigate. I see there is a battery, accelerator stop switch, key switch, solenoid and starter / generator etc. Im interested to hear your experience on which components are more susceptible to give these intermittent syndromes. thanks Buggeye |

Re: G9 Intermittent start problem
Bug, if it were me, first thing to do is check condition of battery, then connections at solenoid and starter terminals. If battery cables are showing crousion, replace with new. Start car in neutral, volt meter on battery +and -, rev up motor, meter should show 14+ volts. Meter on battery, read meter voltage while turning motor over with starter, voltage should not drop below 10 volts (I think).
Read sticky up top of this page, (So your Yami won't turn over) follow sticky, works everytime!! |

Re: G9 Intermittent start problem
These carts are not new, it is very common to have wiring issues. Clean the battery posts and clamps really well, then check all other connectors including the wires to the start solenoid. Its common to replace the small wire connections at the start solenoid. Check all ground wires also.
Two issues I have seen are the pedal switch going bad then if you hit the pedal a bunch of times it works again. Another is the start solenoid going bad if you stomp the floor in front of it then it will work again but keep getting worse. You must replace it with a constant duty solenoid you cant use a car/truck one. In both these cases you will not hear the solenoid click when you hit pedal, if you do then its a wiring issue. If you get through all that it could be the brushes in the generator, but I'd start with wire connections its very common with the age of these carts. |

Re: G9 Intermittent start problem
I am having the same problem, and I continue to see the pedal switch being mentioned as a possible culprit, especially in dirty or muddy environments(I have driven mine through quite a bit of mud). How hard is it to clean this switch and how do I get to it to clean it? I have a 2004 G22. Any pics or video links would be nice. Thanks

Re: G9 Intermittent start problem
It may be on youtube most things are. Don't know if I ever did it on a G22, most yamaha you pull the rubber mat up and there is a panel that comes out you can get at all the pedal stuff from above. Most of them you can hot wire the plug on it and the cart will run when the key is on, to test the switch. If you get in there try to clean and lube the pedal pivots also, they can get full of dirt and eventually the pedals can get tight and not move well.
