Default 85 gas EZGO loosing power

Hi everyone, i`m new here and I just bought my 1st cart today. I think that it is an 1985 EZGO with the 2 cycle engine. Well, I got it home and took my wife and son a ride down the road. It has lots of power and is pretty fast for a golf cart. We made it approx a 1/4 mile down the road and it just acted like it ran out of gas. So I pull over and the engine is idling just fine, I give it gas and nothing happens! it is still idling. I set there for 5 minutes and then it takes off with full power. The cart done this three times and only after I ran it wide open for a few minutes. Any ideas what is going on? Thanks Tommy

Welcome to BGW!
When it does this, and it idles, does it sound like it is bogging when you press the gas pedal? Does the sound change at all when you press the gas pedal?

Yes , it does sound like it is bogging a little, but it does not act like it wants to die. Then after a few minutes, I give it gas and is revs right up and it goes fine. Very strange?

I would say that either the float is set too low, or you have an issue with the fuel pump. The fuel pump runs off the pressure from the crankcase. It could be a weak pump, or a weak pulse from the crankcase. Does the cart start right up, or do you have to crank it a while?
Also make sure your gas tank is venting properly to let air in so the pump can draw fuel from it.

It does not die, it just seems like you let off the gas. When I get stopped it is idling just fine. This might be a dumb question, could there be some kind of issue with the governor?

Actually it should not idle at all, when you take your foot of the throttle it is designed to stall out. That said I wave my magic wand and predict that you have a partially blocked fuel filter after a period of wide open the carburetor starves until the filter picks up again. Why not replace the filter if I am wrong you wasted $2 but ruled out the filter.

Does the motor shut off when you let off the pedal? I guess I assumed when you said idling, that you meant it just has "idle" rpms when you press the pedal. It may just be the starter cranking the engine over. Dave is correct, these motors were not designed to idle like a car.

I have two fuel filters on this one and I changed them out. Cleaned the air filter and the tube going to the carb. (nasty looking goo in there) Runs great! thanks again guys. Here are a few pics of the beast. I bought new fuel line, but I can't get a clamp on the fuel pump fittings. Looks like a need some thin wall fuel line.
