Default New vanguard smokes

Just installed a new B&S 18hp vanguard in my ST480. Fired it up and it smokes pretty bad. Real bad for a new one. These smoke is mostly blue in color. Motor distributor said to take it to an authorized B&S shop and get it repaired. Not what I wanted to hear. Any ideas?

A new Vanguard will not smoke. What exhaust do have on the motor?

It's usually not a good way to resolve your issue if you ask a question, hang out watching your thread for over 1/2 hour,(after it has been responded to within the first 4 minutes) and then disappear. If you want answers, you need to stick around, or at least respond. I guess some people just don't like it when it is me answering their questions.

Sorry, if I offended you, I've been away from the computer since I posted this.

Was the muffler previously run on the ST480?

Yes, the muffler is on its third motor.

Perhaps there was residual oil in the muffler?

Put the rear up on blocks(or remove the belt) and run the motor at about 2500rpm for 4 minutes. See if that clears it out. Check for proper oil level before doing this.

I thought the same thing, but it hasn't cleared up.
