Default Cart hard to start and backfires

I have a 82 ezgo 2 stroke. Recently installed HEI ignitor. Finally got the cart running thanks to another thread. Also cleaned the carb. Now that it is running, it's hard to start, a little rough at low rpms and backfires.
Any suggestions will help.

Switch the red and blue wires on the HEI, and see if it runs better that way.

I was wondering about the fuel. Is there much adjustment in the carb? It seems like the air/fuel ratio is off. By the way, I did try switching the red and blue wires. Didn't fix it. Thanks for the suggestion though.

You could also try opening the plug gap to .040

I was told by a mechanic at a golf course to close the gap to .024. What would opening the gap to .040 do? Wouldn't that create a weaker spark?

sounds like your hei may have gone bad. Did you mount on aluminum heat sink. they get hot mounting to steel.
