Default New to me Yamaha questions

Just bought a Yamaha and need all the information I can get.
Number on the tag below the seat is JGS 315442
I want to catch up maintenance and I'm not even sure on if it has an oil filter and is it o.k. to go to a heavier oil.

I know I'm going to have a thousand questions and appreciate everyone's patience.

Also seems there is a louder than normal ticking at idle but I'm not familiar with these engines at all. It says Yamaha on the rocker cover.
Any information is much appreciated.

Are you sure the s in jgs isn't a 5? If it is a five should be a 1994 g9 pictures would help identify it use recommended weight of oil these are a splash lube so you dont really want to go heavier weight

I see someone went with the cheap aftermarket Comet clutch I just takes to high of RPM to engage, in my opinion. Have fun with your new toy

Changed the oil with a good 10w30. The oil that came out looked as though it was full of S.T.P. or some other oil treatment. Thick and black as smut. Now it sounds as if it has a rod knocking. Not terrible loud but I can hear something that isn't right.
It starts up easy and seems to run pretty well. No smoke.
Going to check valve clearance this morning. I believe it is .004.
Thanks for the replies.

Good looking G9. Enjoy and no more than 1 quart of oil no matter what the dip stick reads.
