G1 Drive Belt Install - Special Tool?
I am trying to install a new drive belt on my Yamaha G1 AM4 golf cart. My owners manual gives me only an image instruction for it. On taking it off, there is a picture that explains that I must line up the sheave marks.
For the install, there seems to be a special tool involved. Of course, I don't have this tool. Can someone tell me what I can use instead? (It looks like it is being used to keep the alignment of the sheave, by holding one side in position.) |

No tools required. It's just like putting on a snowmobile belt (if you've ever done that). Put belt on front clutch, then start belt on top of secondary clutch. Grab both the clutch and belt and roll backward. The belt should pop down in the clutch with a little effort.

I live in southern AZ, no snowmobiles here !
So what is the picture of that special all about? It looked similar to a spring compressor for shocks. |

Re: G1 Drive Belt Install - Special Tool?
It looks like a tool to compress the secondary spring and hold the sheaves open to install the belt easier. I have installed probably hundreds of belts in snowmobiles, golf carts, Gators, etc. and never used a tool. Some can be tight to get the belt over the secondary pulley, but you just roll it on and the sheaves will open up a little to give you the slack you need.

Re: G1 Drive Belt Install - Special Tool?
It was tight, but I rolled it on. Now it sounds like it is running on a gravel road all the time. Not sure if it the tightness of the belt or if something else is going on.
If I start it down the road, slowly, it seems to be pulling back and the back tires will even sometimes spin a little on the pavement. Almost like the back brake is hanging. Did not do that before the new belt. |

Re: G1 Drive Belt Install - Special Tool?
Mine is doing this now. It's not when I initially take off but after running a little bit I hear a noise like something is rubbing or dragging but nothing is. Any ideas?

Secondary sliding sheave bushing badly worn? That will make some miserable sounds. Jack it up & run it while watching the rear clutch, any wobbling is a bad thing.
