89 ezgo engine takes too many turns to fire up.
HI! My ezgo will just putt putt putt for about 30 seconds then fire up and run fine until I stop, then same old thing. I cleaned the carb, checked for fuel line blockage and even took apart the fuel pump looking for leaks, cracks, etc. A friend said it could still be the fuel pump and said I could put a lawn mower pulse pump in place of the original. Anyone know which mower has these type pumps? Or, better, anyone have a suggestion on fixing the problem the right way? Thanks for the help ahead of time.

If your crank seals are going, it becomes hard to start, then evently it won't ever start. but the crank seals play a role in letting your air-fuel mixture be pulled into the intake and start the motor. its possible to use a small 2-4 psi electric fuel pump, 25 bucks. but you still need the vacuum to pull the air-fuel mixture into the intake to make it all work. |

Could be seals and that is wrost thing but before doing that are you getting spark at the plug as it tries to start? check wireing and limit switch funtion as it may not be sending power for spark if it takes a bit for power flow of 12 volts. Dirty connections and such. try all before doing the seal deal.
You need vac to draw in the gas/oil mix not only to vaporize gas but get the oil into the engine block. Again check wire connections and if limit switch is faulty. |

Re: 89 ezgo engine takes too many turns to fire up.
Thanks, but I get great spark. I can say that I jacked up the rear end and ran the engine with the fuel pump removed and I put my finger over the hole to the cam and I honestly don't think I was getting any puffs of air or vacuum, but I was feeling a puff of air from some other location, but could not pin point it. I feel there may be a leak, but cant find it. I re tightened all fasteners in that area. Also, I wonder if I have the carb set right, but don't have any specs to set me right. I used the old turn the needle valve all the way in and back off 1.5 turns to start and go from there. Ignorance is a terrible thing. :)

Check head bolts. Check jug bolts. check for block seals leaking. check block seam for leaks. If you feel something like air when you turn it over but not really from the pump vac/pulse line, you are looking at some leak someplace.

Re: 89 ezgo engine takes too many turns to fire up.
WAAAAAHOOOO! I love you guys! Anybody that has a EZGO cart like mine and is having hard start problems, PLEASE check your block bolts. It would have been the last place I would have thought to be a problem. When I put a wrench to mine, I found that they were all just about finger tight. I tightened them all up and WHAMMO, my cart is running like brand new. I feel like a Putz, in that I probably didn't need a new fuel pump or some of the other pieces arts that I replaced, but I'l chalk it all up to tuition in my continuing education. Luckily, I have some of the finest "professors" right here in this forum. Thank all of you who helped me with your knowledge and expertise.
