Default 79 ez go runs too fast

I have 79 ez go marathon 2 cycle robins engine.
I had a problem earlier and found it
to be stuck points.
I cleaned the points and re-installed
Fan, dust cover, etc
It started up and ran great!!
Except....... It was no longer charging.
Replaced the motor ground wire, and fixed
A bad end on a wire and charged the
battery back up. Now I have no low end.
I could compete in flat track racing now.
When pressing petal I go from 0 to fast
Immediately with no in between.
What could be causing this???
Bad voltage regulator?
I know a lot of you want to speed up but
I need to slow down to campground speed
Rather than racetrack speeds.
Help please.

This picture is for an 87 2pg engine. Does yours look anything like it?

It sounds like you have a throttle problem. Almost like the carburetor is stuck wide open.

Checked it and Throttle is working. Also I can accelerate fine just scary to do so since at the slowest speed before completely letting off pedal is enough power to throw gravel from the tires.
I'm afraid if it's a voltage regulator allowing too much power I could burn up my motor so I appreciate any and all thoughts and comments.

It's a gas engine making power. The only thing the voltage regulator does is bring voltage down to charge the battery. That's not your problem.

Does your throttle cable slide through the lever, or is it attached solid?

Thank you thank yo thank you.
The little stop screw that's on the end of the cable had slipped part way on the cable giving me some acceleration but would not bring the lever all the way back.

Good thing you caught it before it backfired, and blew the seals out.
