1997 TXT Restoration

Hello, I'm looking for some help in my restoration of a 97 TXT gas cart. I will be doing a ground up restoration and I will be putting a lift kit, and a new clutch for power as well as new paint Etc. Are there any common problems with the engines ? Should I rebuild it? or just check the compression ? I plan on replacing anything worn .

I need some spots to look out for!!

I would check the compression on the engine before making any assumptions. 160-180 is optimal, but expect it to be closer to 160 than 180 being a 1997 cart. My 1997 TXT has 165psi in one cylinder and 170 in the other. The oil was only changed once a year, so that comes to only being changed 7-8 times since it was built.

The frame shouldn't be too rusty, but rust is natural for anything that is weathered. The frame catches all the gravel and everything else thrown by the tires, so the paint eventually chips off. I have never saw an E-Z-GO that new with anything more than surface rust though.

Jon (ruredy) knows these things inside and out, so when he comes back around, he'll be able to tell you any and everything you need or want to know.

Thanks for the input ! I plan on checking the engine soon. As far as the rust , just around the battery tray like all the others. I am rebiulding this cart for our local little league to use @ the fields and also parades. Is ther eany place that might give me a break on parts . I was thinking of contacting EZGO direct ? I have a limited budget and I fiqure any help to keep costs down are worth it .

I don't think going directly through E-Z-GO is going to save you any money!!! Manufacturers are quite proud of their items.

On a 97 one of the first things I would do is check the brakes and cables, make sure those are working right. Also all the frontend componets, ie: tie rods, steering, bearings, king pins.
Does it need a new clutch or is this something you have planned on with the bigger tires? A shorter belt works wonders.
As for the engine, clean filters, change plugs, adjust the valves and change the oil to a good synthetic brand like mobil1(if it doesn't smoke). These engines are quite costly to rebuild so unless its smoking or leaking I would tend to leave it alone.

As for a break on parts cost.... well if you know someone that works for any part of textron, they can get a good discount from ezgo. Maybe you can talk someone into it at ezgo.
