Re: bench testing a motor (picture)
Make triple sure you know what kind of motor you have. If you put 12V on the field coil of a Series motor, you will cook the coil. It's designed to always have the armature in series with it. It is only a handful of turns of heavy gauge wire.
Don't ever apply power to your motor if it is not installed in the rear end. The front bearing is in the rear end housing and the armature will be damaged if you try to run it on the bench. |

Re: bench testing a motor (picture)
OK, so I got a spare, used motor but the connection studs are not marked. The moter bolts up fine, but I don't want to hook it till im sure. Anybody shed some light on this.
Thanx BTW The old motor is on the left |

Re: bench testing a motor (picture)
Motor on the left looks like GE motor, on the right looks like AMD motor, motor on right might be a sepex motor. It also looks like someone cut out the aluminum housing to vent the motor unless this came out of a forklift or some other type of unit. Take a picture looking down into the windings of the motors also measure the resistance on both motors I would not run the motor on the right without doing resistance checks first some of the isolators look to be in bad shape. Also take a picture of motor on the right of the end of the aluminum housing are there mountings for a speed sensor

Re: bench testing a motor (picture)
Okay so you have a motor that is not marked the hardest part is knowing whether it's a Sepex or a series motor, the only difference in the markings are the F for field in a sepex and S for stater in a series motor. The Armature is almost always towards the end of the motor so that they can be close to the brushes on the end of the armature.
About the only thing that will happen if you get A1 and A2 mixed up it will run in the wrong direction The same thing goes for the S1 S2 and the F1 F2 Which are almost always towards the center of the motor. Now if you mix up a series motor for a Sepex motor you got trouble. |

Re: bench testing a motor (picture)
Series field winding has very low < 1 ohm resistance. Sepex will have several ohms field resistance.
