86 DS Club Car motor locked up
Hey Guys new to buggies gone wild. I bought a 86 DS knowin the motor was locked up. So what I was wondering is there a characteristic to the KF82 that makes them locked up. I was told that it was started and sitting there at idle when it locked up. The age of cart will prolly require a rebuild but L was just looking for somewhere to start. Great Forum, so much information here it's hard to stop reading. Thanks Guys this is goin to be a fun project I'm a camping nut so the cart will put a new twist to our camping.

Re: 86 DS Club Car motor locked up
What usually happens with these motors is that over time the rod begins to loosen from the crank. As it loosens more and more, you'll hear a knock that will grow louder and louder. When it gets loose enough, it breaks off the oil splasher tab (which is the motor's entire oiling system, bolted to the rod). Once that happens, the deterioration accelerates and the rod breaks free from the crank...and your motor is locked.
If this is what happened, you can usually look on the back side of the block (under the starter/generator) and see a bump where the rod was banging against the block from the inside. I've seen at least three KF82 motors that have done this and heard countless stories on this website describing it: |

Re: 86 DS Club Car motor locked up
Below is a link to my thread which shows the original engine in my cart that had this happen:
http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-c...oval-kf82.html Despite all this, the KF82 motor is a good motor, and they do last a long time. But every motor has its breaking point, and most of the ones still running out there now are at least 25 years old. |

Does your motor have the "KF82 dent" like the one in the photo I posted?

Motor still in cart but it doesn't have the bump. As soon as it warms up a little I will tear into it. Only 15 degrees in ohio:
