Speed vs Rpm
For a standard cc fe290 all stock. Is there a way to figure the rpm from the speed you are going? Lazy minds want to know.

Re: Speed vs Rpm
There really isn't a way until you get used to the sound of the engine!
One tip I know of is, at top speed? your engine (without a rev limiter) will miss, and spit & sputter around 5100 rpms, that tells you that your valves are "floating" and that its best to let off the gas right away! |

Re: Speed vs Rpm
Mine is running 23-25 mph, the engine sounds smooth and not straining. The rev limiter is unhooked, but when going down hill I can feel the gov slow it down. Just don't want to over do it.

Re: Speed vs Rpm
You will know when it throws the rod outa the case. Oil has a tendency to migrate to the crankcase walls and stay there at high rpm, causing starvation of the rod big end. The oil will actually uncover the oil pump pickup. S.A.E. published a paper and made a video years ago and I was fortunate enough to view the video when I was a student at Denver Auto Diesel college in 1975/76. It was enlightening

Re: Speed vs Rpm
Years ago with the old oil before the 10,000 mile oil changes. I ran two 4 cylinder engines at 3600 rpm 8 hours on 8 hours off 24/7 for over a year. Changed oil once a week on each one. No oil filters. They will take more than the engineers think they will. Btw those engines never failed. They were replaced with larger Diesel engine units.

Re: Speed vs Rpm
Nope, they were air cooled in 80-110f temps.
