Batteries: 8-volt x 6 vs. 12-volt x 4?

A friend wants to sell me 4 12-volt deep-cycle batteries for my 48-volt Powerdrive cart. I bought the cart for $40 from my workplace, and it has 4 car batteries in it. (The "mechanic" here is a real loser!)

After lots of wiring repair, everything seems to be working properly, so it's time to get some real power in it.

It looks like a decent set of 8-volt batteries run 5 to 9 hundred bucks! I can get the 4 12-volt units for $350. I'm not sure of the amp-hour rating for them.

The cart won't be used for more than 30 minutes at a time, but there are several steep grades to climb.

Electric carts are a new experience for me, so...any suggestions? Thanks!

You might not be running the cart more than 30 minutes at a time, but you'll still have to charge it and that will take lot's longer than you might have for it to sit around. Just a thought.

First... you got the cart for a song... nice deal!

Second, Are the batteries your friend wants to sell you new? At $350 for a set of 4, I have to assume they are either the wrong type or they are used. Either way I would run away from them.

Buy a decent set of (6) 8 volt batteries, you will be happy you did.

Welcome SteveRand and congrats on the Cart purchase.

You might as well start saving for the new tires/wheels and lift and light kits. They are doing some great things with sound systems for carts now also. You may want to check out some of the motor, etc. upgrades to kick that speed up to 20/25mph. Of real importance you might start working on the "it's a great investment" presentation for the wife. You can get help on all these issues right here on the forum
