How is this accomplished? Is it more efficient than the cable run, and the main thing, cost compared to the extra cable length? Scotty, I learn something new here everyday!

My F - R switch had a kit put in it not long ago. :)

Mine's a model 881 industrial. Scotty's is ( I believe ) a model 952 Shuttle.

SM, the reversing contactor can be bought or configured using two 6 post Solenoids. I think Roady89 had some for sale a short while ago? CHEAP! then you just have a toggle switch F&R up at the Wheel and short cables.
