Battery theory, charging, maintenance
You never know what you run into surfing the web. I started out looking for a temperature corrected hydrometer and ran into this link from the Deka/East Penn battery company:
Deka Industrial Battery Service Manual. It was written for big industrial batteries (forklifts, towmotors, etc.), but the theory and maintenance information applies to golf cart batteries, as well. Probably more info than anyone needs, but a pretty good reference guide. Hope it helps someone out there. RLW |

Re: Battery theory, charging, maintenance
Looks like interesting stuff. The section on correcting/improving a sulfated battery was interesting. No " hocus-pocus"!!!

Re: Battery theory, charging, maintenance
Lernt sompen,
The rise in specific gravity during recharge is not uniform or proportional to the amount charge returned in ampere-hours. During the early part of the charge, there is no gassing action to mix the electrolyte with the heavier acid being released from the plates. The heavier sulfuric acid will lay on the bottom. A hydrometer reading which draws electrolyte from the top of the cell does not indicate the true specific gravity or actual state of charge. During the gassing portion of the charge, the sulfuric acid mixes, and the specific gravity rises rapidly to full charge |
