how does it work?
i have a ezgo textron automatic charger. timer knob and meter works and does charge. im curious as to what "automatic charger" means. it has a knob that says "on" "off" and counts from 1 to 11.

Re: how does it work?
You have a manual charger with a timer.
The Automatic Charger on the label is misleading. It refers to the fact that a Ferroresonant Transformer automatically performs a tapered charge. There are two sets of chargers that look almost the same, having a timer knob in the upper left corner. The one you have starts at 12 hours and counts down to Zero. (Timer knob turns counterclockwise.) The other one, which is truly an automatic charger, starts at Zero and counts up to 12. Here is picture of what your charger looks like with cover off. Note absence of the control board needed to make it a true automatic charger. |

Re: how does it work?
ok thanks johnnie. thats what i thought it was but after reading about an automatic charger on here i began to wonder. one thing im worried about is how much do i charge every night to keep the batts topped off without over charging the batteries. alot of days i dont drive it at all and some days it does get driven. you have any idea or is the best thing to do is periodically, when i can, to just check the voltage?

Re: how does it work?
Charge after each use, no matter how slight. Once a week if it sits that long.
If you are discharging to about 70% SoC, 6 hours on the timer should be about right. If you like math (), determine SoC before charging and charge for 2 hours for every 10% below 100%, rounding up on the hours. About once a month, give them a full 12 hour charge. One nice thing about the ferroresonant transformer type chargers, the charge rate decreases as the on-charge voltage increase, so it is very difficult to overcharge with them. It is possible, but you just about have to do it intentionally. |

Re: how does it work?
Nope, but I'm sure I have some old fuses lying around that are just as dusty, but my PhotoShopping/GIMP skill aren't that good.
