Help - Cracked weld on leaf shackle/mount
Hi,
2007 Club Car Precedent. 4" Jake's Aarm lift, 22x11x12 tires/rims. Rear seat on it's way. Moving right along on the lift kit and medium duty spring install until I get to the drivers side rear leaf spring. I was starting the spring install and the front leaf spring mount bolt would not slide out of the bushing. I noticed that the outer 2 welds on the shackle were broken and had separated about 1/8". It looks the the previous owner must have run something over because you can see a small ding on the front bottom of the shackle. The shackle is OK but tweaked just enough so I can't get the bolt out. I tried beating it, pulling it with a C-clamp ect. Couple of questions: Should I just cut through the bushing and bolt with a sawz-all? I did not want to heat it with the battery gasses above my head. Once bolt is out... How to fix the welds? I am sure I could find someone to weld it but not sure if the electronics would fry when grounding to the cart so let club Car deal with it or do you think I could just use a couple of self tappers or 2 through bolts to the back side. Not sure if I would weaken the frame by drilling self tappers or through bolts? Thank you in advance for your replies. crunchman |

Re: Help - Cracked weld on leaf shackle/mount
Looks to me like you've got a lot of battery corrosion going on there too. I'd remove the batteries, clean that area up good to remove any corrosion and have the cracked spring mount welded up by a good alum welder. A good welder will put his ground close to the area that needs repair and your electronics will be fine... I'd not put any faith in self tapping screws for something such as this and while through bolting may work the amount of effort required is silly compared to the correct fix as welding will only take a few minutes. Take care of that corrosion!

A scotch brite wheel on a drill or roto tool will work good too.

Re: Help - Cracked weld on leaf shackle/mount
Thank you to everyone that responded with the good advice.
I am going to Depot tommorrow to match up the leaf bolt I will have to cut out and definitly will buy a scotch brite pad to get at that exposed corrosion. Unfortunitly, I doubt that I could lift the batteries out due to a recent surgery but sounds like I have a nice winter project to get too. I contacted a local welding shop that was recommended to me and they charge $85 / hr for repairs and will prorate the hour if it takes less time. I need to finish the lift kit and hope to get the cart in next week. I will post follow up pics when completed. Teccro, thanks for your answer regarding the electronics ( OBC, motor, ect. ) I am assuming at least flipping the tow/run switch to tow? Sure hope you are right, it could get expensive real fast if things got fried, Thanks again, crunchman |

Hey man, sure welding it would be the best option but if you look there is enough material there that you could drill clean through that hanger through the frame and put a bolt through it, just an option. I would eventually get it welded but it would get you going and work like a charm.....

I was not sure of how much and what was involved with welding that area so I too thought of the through bolt. I noticed that broken weld when I first got the cart but had forgotten about it so it is operable but needs repaired. After talking with the welding shop that is 20 minutes away, I will go for the proper fix for under $85. So, the board consensus is the electronics will be OK for welding? Thanks again, crunchman |

Re: Help - Cracked weld on leaf shackle/mount
Yes... Remove the batteries as you don't want to weld anywhere near batteries, and if equipped with a tow/run switch flip it to the tow position. With the main battery leads disconnected the electronics should be fairly well isolated. As commented a good welder will place his ground lead near the point of weld to further reduce energizing the entire frame with weld current.

I hear you with the back issues, if you disconnect the batteries you should be OK.
let the welder strighten the shackel brackets before welding. I would get help and remove the batteries at some point and clean that up. |

I can't help but think that the cracks are as bad as they appear due to the acid corrosion...
