Default Charger problem

I recently bought a 1991 DS 36V with no batteries. I have a good used set that I put in and it does run. An ACCU POWER Automatic Charger came with it. I plugged it in yesterday afternoon and it came up to 23-25 amps. The batteries were not discharged much so I expected to come out this morning and it would be fully charged and cut off or down to 4-5 amps at most. It was at 15 amps and the batteries were pretty warm and has been bubbling and venting. I cut it off and the Voltage measured 38.9 volts.

The charger appears to work like it should except that it is not tapering/cutting off the charge. Any ideas from the experts?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Paul

Do the batteries hold voltage after being off charger for 12 hours?

They were at 37.8 before I put them in and ran it about a mile.

CTD -

Thanks for the info. I'm pretty limited on chargers but it looks like #8 is the one I need to be looking at. These batteries were in my wife's EZGO and have always been charged with the digital EZGO charger. They usually are at 37.5 - 37.9V 12 hours after they were charged.

I have 2 questions. 1) Would the charger still be at 15 amps after 12-14 hours with this battery pack? 2) Would the timer affect the number of amps and not tapering after quite a few hours of charging or does it only cut off the timer after so many hours of charging?

Thanks again.

1) yes ... a fully charged pack (36v) is 38.3v after 12hrs rest
here is a chat to show at rest volts

so your old batteries are at 70% of full charge, and not showing enough volts to shut off charger and it keeps trying but won't shut off

2) charger has a 16hr shut off controlled by timer, the relay controls the amps

You cut the charger off and the voltage was 38.9, seems I read somewhere it should get to 42 or so on a 36 volt pack. Like a 48 volt will get up to about 63 volts. Just things to think about.

CTD,

OK

So, even if the voltage was 38.9 volts when I took them off the charger, the charger would still be going at 15 amps? According to your chart, my old batteries are 80-90% after a 12 hour rest. At what point would the charger start tapering the charge or cut off the charger completely? Is there a maximum number of hours it will charge regardless of battery charge or will it cut off automatically after a set number of hours?

Sorry for all the questions but this is a brave new world for me and I'm trying to make sense of it all. If my batteries are 80-90% best case scenario, will this charger never work properly (taper and cut off) ? If it is always going to keep charging at least 12-15 amps with less than 100% batteries, what is the best way to charge these batteries to their max?

Thanks again.

cut off is between 44v and 45 v for 36v charger

i thought that was with an ezgo charger

yes ... it goes down in amps at end of charge to equal out pack

most chargers shut off at 6 hrs regardless of volts

at this point i'm not sure ...only thing i could suggest is trying another charger on your cart and see if it acts the same

38.9v is over charged 37.5v is under charged

we need a log
1) pack voltage
2) each battery
take a readings (1&2) now, log it
fill batteries with water
run cart around a little , 15min or so
take readings(1&2) log it
plug cart in
take reading (1) log it
let charger run
take reading and log (1) at 6hr, 10hr & 16 hr mark (set timers or alarm)
if charger is at 44.5+v at 16h mark unplug charger
if charger is less than 44v let it run another 2 hours or until it is above 44v
take readings (1&2) log it
wait 12hrs take readings 1&2
post your results here

CTD,

Will do.

I just checked the pack after 12 hours off charger and it is at 37.7V. Four of the batteries (Trojan T105) are between 6.24 & 6.28V. One is at 6.34V and one is at 6.17.

I'll check again in the morning and start the process.

Thanks for all your help.
