91 that you can hear firing, but wont go
Has anyone had any issues were the gas pedal switch is bad that would prevent it from starting correctly when you hit the gas. I feel like i have to baby it to find the sweet spot to get it to start and go.
When I do hit the gas, it will try to start and crank, but all i hear it is trying to start with occasional sound like its going to go. Plus the exhaust pipe is warm.... Any thoughts? Thx. |

Could it be the accelerator starter limit micro switch?

Man what is it with '91s not starting lately? This is like the fourth one posted about within a week or so.
Sounds like it could maybe be a faulty micro switch, but I don't think it is since you said the motor spins every time you gas it. You can bypass it and find out. Here's your wiring diagram: |

Re: 91 that you can hear firing, but wont go
Its just crazy, I have hours and hours trying to figure this out. I am going to try cleaning out the exhaust tomorrow and see if that will do anything.
I feel I down everything to make this thing run, but it just won't go. Any other suggestions would be great if you have come across this issue.... |

Re: 91 that you can hear firing, but wont go
Hi John,
We have replaced gas lines, fuel pump, new non oxygenated gas, spark plugs, completely cleaned the carb system, new air filter, new coil, has good compression. Gas is getting to plug, because it is wet. I was reading another post how a guy cleaned out the exhaust and it ran great then. So that is on my list today I guess. BUT, I did get it to run two days ago for a short time and ran perfect. Let the motor sit for a few hours and back to not wanting to start again. It sounds like its going to start, but it wont fire over..... I feel it shouldnt be that tough to fix, but apparently it is.... |

Re: 91 that you can hear firing, but wont go
you can unbolt the muffler and see if it starts and runs .
have you tried running it with the air intake hose disconnected from the carb (air filter hose ) if not I would try that first . if it runs like that , maybe the holes in the choke are plugged. |

Re: 91 that you can hear firing, but wont go
someone can correct me if im wrong but I believe you can also disconnect the engine kill wire back at the engine ( single white / black wire ) this will eliminate all switches for the kill circuit , you may have to plug it back in to shut engine off. if it runs like this then it sounds like you may have an intermittent problem with one of the micro switches , key switch.

Re: 91 that you can hear firing, but wont go
Well an update from the weekend. It wasnt the exhaust, but ended up replacing the already new spark plug with another new one, but also unplugged the air filter hose and kept putting our finger on and off of it and it finally fired. NOW,,, it is running and the engine runs perfect when driving, but if we stop it seems like i have to fight it to get it running again. NOW,, it usually takes about 5-7 times on and off the pedal to finally get it to pop and go.
I am thinking maybe its the microswitches,,, thoughts? |
