Yes! Pinching off the fuel supply worked!

It rev'ed so high that the motor cut out. What causes that?

So it's a carb issue?! Which way do I adjust the float? Could it also be the main jet? I couldn't remove it for a thorough cleaning.

The motor died because it ran out of fuel. You had the line pinched off. The float needs to be adjusted so the fuel supply is shut off sooner. That usually means bending the tang away from the float, and toward the needle/seat.
It could also just be debris keeping the float needle open.
