1999 Carryall no spark, key doesn't stop starter.

I started working on this cart which was completely dead. Looks like the wiring has been changed recently which may explain the problems.
I had to replace the solenoid and the only way I can get it to work is to ground the bottom of the case. The diode was mounted backwards so I have left it off for now.
If I turn on the ignition the starter will only engage with the ground wire connected to the solenoid. But it won't stop even with the key off until I remove the ground wire.
There is no spark and the accelerator position nor For/Rev lever makes any difference in the operation.
I suspect the micro switches may not be wired correctly but unsure of anything at this point.
