Default New 0.5 over Pistons; Does the Cylinder Require Boring??

Hey guys,

Just as the title says I’ll be putting in new piston & rings that are 0.5mm over stock into the G9 I picked up yesterday as it is burning oil.
My question is- Can I get away with just honing the cylinder? Or do I have to take it to a machine shop to get it bored out to fit the over 0.5mm piston?

Btw I will be posting up a new build thread shortly, just have not had a chance to take any before and after pictures….

Welcome back Yes you will need to have it bored, unless it's already 0.5 over. The top of the poston will show a 0.25 or 0.50 if it's already been done. I would have liked to see you do a compression test and then tear it down first, could have just been damaged oil rings. Let us know what you find.

I'll have to dig out my compression gauge and do a test, I'd be interested just to see the numbers as well....
now just to figure out where I left it....

I am also going to take a look at some top speed #'s just to see what kind of changes I get along the way.

And thanks for the W/B

I am 99% sure that it hasn't already been bored out

Glad to see you went with getting the cylinder bored, thats no place to cheap out on the repairs if you want it to last.

Thats what I was thinking this weekend, how much should I get shaven off??

I was going to ask the guys in the shop what they thought, but they build large race engines all day long, not too sure if they would know what to do for this piddly golfcart engine

They are 6:1 compression IIRC. I think you cut so far and hit the squish band.

If you want max power you must have a fresh bore and piston with a 2 stroke.
