Here's how to make a PDS go 36 mph on 18" tires

Start with a stock golf cart, in my case I have an early 2001 PDS with old steering. I bought it off the original owner and it was garage kept it's entire life and dealer serviced with receipts since 2001. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the cart. Even though the cart had a speed chip and it did 19 mph I wanted to double that so I went forward as follows.

1) Remove entire drive system (controller, solenoid and motor)
2) Order ScottyB package 909 (Alltrax DCX500 & solenoid)
3) Buy six new 8v batteries for 48v pack (I used T890's)
4) Select a 48v charger (I went with QC on-board)
5) Swap stock 12:1 gears to 6:1 high speed gears
6) Upgrade all high current cables (I used 1/0 welding cable with tinned closed end lugs
7) Call D&D, tell them the speed you want to go, wait for and install new motor

8) Need a SOC meter to monitor pack (I used ScottyB meter and plate)
9) I choose to paint body and add back seat to freshen up the look
10) I also had a set of aluminum wheels with 18" tired from another project leftover. They look far better then stock.

Take cart out for test drive on brand new batteries. 36 mph is flying I'll tell you.

You are only spinning the motor at 4000RPM with 6:1 gears on 18"tires, so you don't have to worry too much about over-revving the motor going down steep hills.

Setting the red line at 6500RPM will give you 58MPH.

What do you have the regen brake current set to?
And what does the pack voltage climb to when you let off on the pedal at 36MPH?

Surprisingly the stock brakes and regen work well so far.

I do not play golf or even go close to a course...ever.

Regen is set to 65% if I remember right. Pack voltage climbs to 51.5v if I lift throttle at 36 mph.

How is the torque? Could you climb a small but rather steep hill? I think I will order the eight to one gears ( for a little more torque) or do you recommend doing the 6 to 1 gears? Great looking cart by the way.

The torque is better then stock PDS. I like the 6:1 gears a lot but you need at least 500 amp controller, large cables and good batteries. With stock PDS motor it would pull excessive amps reducing the battery life substantially. The custom D&D motor pulls less then 70 amps wide open throttle, flat ground.

Wheel spacers are on order (1 inch). I already have offset wheels but changing lanes at 36 mph is a bit unsteady, not terrible so I think 1" spacers should help a lot.
