Default It lives!! But noisey. 82 Marathon

I replaced enough wires to get the 82 Marathon to fire up. It hesitates to turn over and sometimes takes a few tries. Tomorrow I will clean all the connections.

Once it starts the seems to be a lot of fairly loud rattling. Sounds to me like the drive clutch. Otherwise iot seems to run out good.

Carefully disassemble the F/R switch, its likely the contacts are burned/corroded.I usually take them and lightly touch them to the side of a bench grinder wheel, just to square them up.Also test to make sure the solenoid is putting out power to the starter at every pedal-cycle,sometimes when they are on their way out, they will work intermittently. Also check your pedal switch connections, and all grounds at the frame-rail.Hope this helps.

I cleaned the grounds and a few other connections. Now it gets juice every time but really struggles to turn at 1st then finally spins up to speed and starts but the starter/gen gets pretty warm buy that time. I have not yet messed with the f/r switch.

I am more worried about the noisy clutch. I will try and remember to get a sound bite/video tomorrow.

I now also have to deal with the carb.
Even with cleaning the tank and replacing hoses and filter must have picked up a chunk of crap because it started running bad tonight. Popping backfiring and dying.

The starter may need cleaning or repair, bad brushes can cause it to hesitate to start,as can a bad armature. You can unbolt the clutch cover and look for loose or damaged parts.
