Default Since we're talking about Vanny's...

Went out on the trails today and notice my 21hp Vanny is not really running in top shape. I still have power but throttle response seems a bit off when idling around. It sounds like it hesitates like its not getting gas but as soon as I press down the pedal it goes. It also backfires all the time now and I am wondering if its a jet issue, gas, or dirty carb.

I run high test in my tank but I know there still could be and issue. I plan to pull the carb off and see what can be done. It is a 2-barrel carb just don't know what type yet.

Any thoughts...I have the rev kit, HP cam, air filter, timing key...Could it be running too rich as to why it backfires during deceleration?

Is the air filter clogged? I had this happen before and it had the same symptoms. This is why I want to install an enclosed filter. I would pull the filter and see if it goes away.

I'm going to start looking tomorrow. I just got in after riding and really didn't feel like diagnosing this evening. otherwise, I would drive myself nuts. It's been doing the backfiring for awhile but I never gave any thought since I was having too much fun riding it. The hesitation on the throttle started after a day of hard riding at the ATV park..and it was dusty that day which might have got dirt inside the carb..
I'll do more tomorrow when I have time..see what turns up.

If it backfires the butterfly's aren't closing all the way.

It only backfires when running near or WOT. It comes through the exhaust. Could the butterfly still not closing completely cause this?

Make sure the filter is clean and the choke is staying open.

Yes, had a HD that did the same thing too as my cart. Maybe I should take one of my spare HD mufflers and use that....then maybe it will really sound like an HD!!!
