Default dumb ? on a golf cart transmission

can someone tell me how the forward and reverse work on a gas car? I have a 400cc hondamatick engine and trany that I would like to mount on a golf cart but I want to be able to keep my reverse

On the old 2 strokes the engine runs backward for reverse.
The 4 stroke carts use a transaxle.

Here is a thread with pictures inside a Yamaha G2/8/9 rear end, which is essentially the same as EZGO's 4-stroke transaxles.

we put a 600 bike motor in a g16 yamaha last year. we tryed the stock rearend it didnt work out .the thing would do 8 mph in 6 gear not good at all. we ended up puting an atv rearend in it .this motor was chain drive. just something to think about..

Thanks for the info sounds like the project I have in mind have to start looking for a doner atv
