Default Valve adjust on G16 question

My power was down and the engine would bog down under a heavy load. I talked to Tom at CPP and he said check my valve clearance.

On a cold motor I took off the valve cover and took out the plug and rotated the motor till the piston was at the top and both valves were closed. I set them till a .004 gauge would slide out with some resistance. It looked like it was closer than .004 before and the motor was quiet. It now is noisy. It now clicks but has much more power.

What did i do wrong or is this normal?

I used to adjust valves on Honda's, Toyota's, and Nissan's. With solid lifters, some of them would make all kinds of noise. I had an old mechanic tell me one time, "noisy valves are happy valves". I have no idea if this would apply to a Yamaha golf cart but I thought I would throw it out there. If it seems to be running better, I would just leave it and keep an eye on it for a while.

I can't say that I know this is true, but a race engine builder once told me that the valve stems actually stretch when the engine is running. So you adjust the valves to the given clearance, so the valves seat on the valves seats, sealing the cylinder, as apposed to the valve being held open, from the stretched stem, resting against the rocker.
Hense the saying "noisey valves are happy"
My heads beginning to smoke again!! Mike

Just for chitsngiggles, has anyone ever, or heard of, adjusting the clearance to .001 when hot and then see what it is when it cooled down?

Might be a little test for me this weekend when all the girls are sun'in.

you ajusted the too loose

there need to be a bit of friction when moving the feeler gauge on ajustement

now a push rod will jump off at high rpm

make sure the engine is cold ajust to .004" tdc

take the spark plug off put a screw driver in the hole make sure the piston is up all the way & both valvle are loose , if not rotate the engine over 180 degrees & try again

good luck

I adjusted it on the COMPRESSION stroke yesterday and all is well. If you adjust them to .004 on the EXHAUST stroke they will be about .125 on the compression. Runs fine and quiet now.
