Default g2 engine rebuild tips and tricks needed

Hello all, my newly purchased G2 will backfire dump black smoke and lose power. I ordered a engine rebuild kit. Planning on a do it yourself job,
with the exception of having the cylinder bored. I have no manual, did order a clutch side puller. Is there anything i need to know before i start this adventure?

Black smoke is likely an over-fuel issue I would check that, try to get it running right you can test the compression and see where its really at. Make sure it has one qt of oil in it and no gas in the oil. Make sure the airbox is clean and sealed well the top has to fit tight. Make sure carb is clean and see what you have. Don't overtighten the spacer behind carb they break, the one on the head of black plastic type material. Make sure you don't have fuel pump issue and getting fuel from the pulse line, pump is just a diaphragm in there.

I have not been able to check compression yet, but i found alot of oil in the air box. This doesn't seem right, maybe oil getting past the rings? The backfire would occur under load, say uphill, after that the cart was barely able to make it home. tons of smoke and no go.

Oil in the airbox can be caused by 2 things, stuck float/needle in the carb that alows the gas to get by the rings into the crankcase, raising the oil level and getting into the airbox and muffler or over filling the crankcase , remember only 1 qt of oil.

Its a lawn engine, about as simple as they come. Not difficult to work on if you learn a few things, get some tools. Some of us had/have an interest in those things and were more involved in it. Things like this are way easy today, you can look up everything you need on the net and do it much faster. I had to talk to people in person/phone to find out things when I started. Couple years ago I bought a jeep cherokee that needed some love. I put a water pump and belts on it then found the front 4wd axles were making nasty noises, seemed like the universals were toast maybe. So I looked it up in a jeep forum (never worked on a jeep before) and found instructions that told me what size wrenches I'd need for the entire removal of the axle shafts in front! Took them to a 4wd place and had new offroad universals pressed in, I had less time doing the front axle than slapping a water pump on. Woman didn't like it though, so I sold it and pocketed $1K profit.

The best advice I could give, is to mark the cam and balancer when you take the side case off. Would help greatly when comes to reinstallation. If you need torque spec's ect, all you need to do is ask. This isn't brain surgury, unles your working on my brain!

LOL, I know some people are not into wrenches, and that is fine (maybe you are the lucky one?). Just saying if you want to dive into a lawn/cart engine, its a great place to learn the basics, lots of help here and other places, nothing to worry about, at worst you don't have much invested anyway and parts are available to fix it. You screw up an expensive auto/marine engine and you will not be happy with yourself, or your wallet will not.
