1993 G8 front cowl/dash braces
I'm new here and I've read through alot of posts and I must say its very informational and helpful. Great site.
I just acquired a 1993 Yamaha G8. Instead of just fixing the cosmetic issues, I decided to tear it down and start from frame out with fixing things. When I took the front cowl off and the dash I noticed the supports/braces that hold them in is rusted out. The outter passenger side support with mounting points is the worse and small places on others. Are you able to buy these or will I need to fab some up? If so, has anyone encountered this and if you have what exactly did you do to fix it? |

Re: 1993 G8 front cowl/dash braces
Hi Drew. First off, you've got one of the finest machines Yamaha EVER built! Be proud of your G8! You're welcome to join our one and only G8 club, as long as you supply a picture or 10 of your G8!
I have the exact same machine - 1991 G8. Are you refering to those little nuts and bolts (about 10 of them) that run all through the rubber grommet around the front cowl? There should be a nut, half moon washer and a small bolt. Mine rusted out at both sides of the lower cowl also. The braces themselves at that point also rusted, due to water, mud, etc being thrown from the tires to this area. I fabbed and welded new braces in this area. As long as there is one nut through that on each side, it won't go anywhere. There should only be two more bolts located under the Yamaha emblem, which attaches the front of the cowl to a brace on the front of the frame. Oh, and smart move on tearing down to frame! You can really bring a cart back to life by starting bottom up!! Come join us in the club. Sometimes we bs alot, but there is a ton of info to be had in the 1000 posts!! Jim |

Re: 1993 G8 front cowl/dash braces
Yes the 2 braces on both sides of the cart (angled torwards front of cart and kinda bend in towards cart at top, has 3 mounting holes in them). If I fab some up, will it be necessary to put the slight bend in it up top? Obviously I wouldn't be able to make it as long as original because of the shape of front cowl but would be easier to fab without it. But I dont wanna make it weaker just to make it easier.
The pictures I will deffinately get up, I would usually take some to show a reference when asking for help but it was about 11pm lastnight when I decided to stop working and forgot to snap some. I've been looking through the G8 Club posts and have enjoyed reading them and look forward to much more. Thanks again. |

Drew, study these 2 pictures. I braced the foot rest support to the shock tower with light gage channel. You can see larger pictures if you go to my photo album in my signiture info. Anyway, this may help you gain strangth by doing this.

Re: 1993 G8 front cowl/dash braces
It is a little rough, looks like you have your work cut out for you. But it will be worth it in the long run, I believe! I think I would replace the rusted area's with light gage angle. I wouldn't remove the up-rights that are there. Then make the car run, all the while doing maintenance as you go. Then when it runs good, tear it down to bare frame and paint and detail as you reassemble.
Good luck, enjoy! Mike |

Re: 1993 G8 front cowl/dash braces
so best bet would be to leave the existing up rights, cut out the bad spots and just put new metal in those particular areas? the floor boards are decently soild still, just a little surface rust but i think ill go ahead and just put all new metal floorbards in or you think itll be fine to just clean them up and prime and paint them?
