Yamaha G16 gas battery
I was looking at a group size 24 battery for my g16, is 800 cca way too much for a cart or will it be fine and not cause any damage. its the autocraft marine/ rv starter battery at advance auto. I run my cart almost all year long so i figure higher cca will be better in the winter months

Re: Yamaha G16 gas battery
High CCA only specifies a high end limit, has no effect on the lower amp draw devices used. The amp draw of the installed devices (lights , starter & such) is generally determined by the voltage applied if the demands on the device stay the same (a big block will put more load on a starter than a small block, ect). Lights & accessories draw the same amount of "juice" as long as the voltage of the battery is the same. Some racing vehicles have been configured with a 16v battery system, thats where you could get into trouble. Those are generally drag race cars, and typically does not apply to gas golf carts. Long story short(er), as long as the battery used is a 12v battery, you are not going to burn anything out because of the batteries high amp capabilities when under severe loads (that are never experienced in a golf cart).

Ok, the idiot who owned my cart last put a 400cca deepcycle in and i have had to charge it with a maintainer if i wanted the cart to start without it being in neutral or on a hill

Re: Yamaha G16 gas battery
That was simply a bad battery, capable of no where near its 400a rated capacity. Golf carts draw closer to 1/10 of that amount.

Re: Yamaha G16 gas battery
But isnt deepcycle awful for starting but good for running accessories... I like to have a starter grade battery in my cart for the constant start stop a cart goes through. Plus the old battery says it was shipped feb 2014

Re: Yamaha G16 gas battery
The question of a deep cycle battery in a gas golf car....My 2cents worth, bad idea. The golf car charging circuit is just like an automobile, 14.5 to 15.5. There is no way a deep cycle battery can live like that. Just throwing away money on that purchase. I do like the higher CCA batteries with gas engines with no compression release. Makes for much less "hesitation" starting.
