Yamaha G1 won't pull hills
I have a 1984 Yamaha G1 cart. Just rebuilt entire engine, new top end, new crank bearings and seals. It runs perfect on flat ground but as soon as you hit a incline it's sluggish. If you stop on a hill and try to take back off it will not move. I took primary clutch off and cleaned it, installed new belt and didn't really see much wrong with it. Then I removed secondary clutch and cleaned it and replaced Ramps on it. It has a Jakes lift with 22" tires on it. Anybody know what it could be? Working on the cart for a buddy that just bought it.

Re: Yamaha G1 won't pull hills
I know to said it's rebuilt but check compression and Jack up cart and watch the clutches make sure they are shifting smoothly belt riding to top of primary and sinking to bottom of primary if that all checks out and you have some regular golf cart tires throw them on and see what it does 22s are pretty tall so that will kill low end torque

What spring are you running in the secondary clutch? If stock replace with a heavy duty one.

Re: Yamaha G1 won't pull hills
Update: I checked compression which is at 105psi. I don't know how accurate my gauge is though. I ordered a power spring for the secondary and installed it. The spring did not help. I stopped it on a hill, raised body and watched clutches. Belt is at top of rear clutch and bottem of front clutch. When I try to take back off after stopped on the hill the front clutch spins not nearly as fast as it should I don't think but the belt doesn't spin the secondary . The cart kind of jerks. It has a new belt from eBay on it. The fixed sheeve of the front clutch is rusty also. What do you all think?

Re: Yamaha G1 won't pull hills
How steep of a hill are you talking about? I know it can be tough to describe but a slight grade or something steeper? Big tires really kill torque. If you have access to the smaller tires you may want to put those back on and try it out. At least that way you'll know whether you have a mechanical problem or whether it is what it is with the bigger tires.
You may want to temporarily take the muffler off and then try things as well. |
