Exhaust- Muffler- Issue
Good Morning To All, I own a 1991 EZ GO that I have removed the oil pump from and now mix the gas and oil. The cart runs fine and the mixture is not an issue- no smoke at all. My issue is some exhaust smell coming from the engine compartment. Has anyone ever extended the pipe off the muffler. As it sits right now it does not clear out the bottom of the cart. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Good health and good weather my friends!!

An extension will do no harm as long as it is the same size or
larger. If larger be sure to prevent any leaks at the junction or it will crackle. |

If you make it longer, definitely make it larger,Maybe even cut off the original, and enlarge the entire outlet as well as making it longer. We had one that the outlet broke off,and tore the muffler open a little around the opening,It ran better, since the restriction was less.Hope this helps.

Re: Exhaust- Muffler- Issue
Are you suggesting that if I remove the "tail pipe" from the muffler and enlarge the size of the tail pipe and opening to perhaps a 1 1/2" pipe/opening that I will improve power/performance? It makes sense as that is what we do to race cars, however never thought of it for my underpowered EZ Go.

Re: Exhaust- Muffler- Issue
The can on that muffler has a perforated tube on the inlet, then the sound just bounces around between the tube and the can itself. The outlet is very small,I think its around 5/8"?Just going to 1" would make a difference.Tack weld a piece on,take it for a ride and see,If you don't like it,you can change it.Then weld on the final piece.Hope this helps.

Re: Exhaust- Muffler- Issue
Right. I figured it is about the same amount of work to go to 1 1/2" and reduce the back pressure as much as possible as that might help too? I also figured that one of you experts had already tried all of my ideas and Would already know the answers to them? What I am looking for is more power w/o more noise. I'm old and like quiet. That's a BIG change from when I was young and loved to drive around with loud pipes.

Re: Exhaust- Muffler- Issue
I might mention that this cart is on Kauai and we don't have access to a lot of parts or materials there so I would likely just use elect emt tube for the exhaust pipe. Any thoughts?

Re: Exhaust- Muffler- Issue
I agree with everyone as long as you don't restrict the size you should be good. This is all happening after your muffler (main noise reducer/restriction) so I don't see any major performance gains either. But you could have some cool custom exhaust

Re: Exhaust- Muffler- Issue
Because of the tiny tail pipe and multiple original bends in it I have to believe that this does cause extra restriction over a larger pipe but without putting it on a Dyno I can only check the difference in performance AFTER I go to all the work to change it. Hopefully someone has already jumped this "hoop" and can tell me how it worked for them.
Agreed that most of the back pressure is in the muffler itself and it is designed to run that way. Unfortunately the mfg. is not interested in performance nor longevity as they are in the business to sell more vehicles. Just like putting a chip on your diesel PU gives you added power, added fuel economy, added torque, but is after market, the mfg, generally hates things like that! These tiny engines should not be too sensitive to simply enhancing changes, in theory, but you may know of exceptions. No one wants to burn valves, over heat engines, or wear out parts needlessly. Anyone have cooling ideas for carts? Oil coolers or similar? The splash system they have is not really designed for anything but going from hole to hole and not really for idling while sitting I hear? |
