Default clutch or rear end

84 ezgo gas ran good until getting a weird noise when I take off and let off the gas. Now it's slowing down. I changed the drive belt and no improvement. Now barely any powe forward. Reverse seems fine. I noticed it has a slamming noise from forward to reverse and vice versa. I'm at a loss. Please help.

Is it the motor slowing down or the cart?

After looking it over better I don't think it's either now. The rattling noise is from a broken mount on the generator. When I put a load on the motor the generator rattles. Now it seems to move just fine. Different issue now is after running it for awhile the muffler was smoking pretty good. Could this just be from running it to long and motor just getting hot?

I'm taking it's a 2 cycle which I know nothing about, but I have read here
that mufflers get plugged on them and people burn them out to unplug.

You do stop the engine from running before you change it to reverse and forward, the engine can not be running when switching from F to R
